Lizzy Caplan to Star in ‘Fatal Attraction’, A Reimagining of the Classic Film for Paramount+
She’s not gonna be ignored.
Paramount+ has cast Lizzy Caplan in its Fatal Attraction series, a reimagining of the hit 1987 movie starring Michael Douglas and Glenn Close.
Caplan will star as Alex, a woman who becomes obsessed with her married lover after a brief affair. A “deep-dive reimagining of the classic psychosexual thriller and ‘80s cultural touchstone,” the new series will explore the timeless themes of marriage and infidelity, through the lens of modern attitudes towards strong women, personality disorders and coercive control, according to the show’s official press release.
Alexandra Cunningham (Dirty John, Chance) will write the scripts and serve as showrunner and executive producer on the series, working with executive producer Kevin J. Hynes (Perry Mason). He and Cunningham share a co-story credit.
“Alexandra brings an incredibly strong and nuanced point of view to a story that became a cultural phenomenon, but has thus far only been told from the male gaze,” says Paramount+ Original Scripted Series President Nicole Clemens in a statement. “Partnered with Kevin, they will bring the next explosive chapter of this story to a new generation, with a balanced eye to the complexities of the human psyche.”
Fatal Attraction reunites Caplan with David Nevins, Chief Content Officer at Paramount, who cast her as the female lead of Showtime’s Masters of Sex, where she received an Emmy nomination for her role as Virginia Johnson.
Caplan recently portrayed another iconic movie role, playing Annie Wilkes, first portrayed by Kathy Bates in the film Misery, in the Hulu series Castle Rock. Caplan has also been in the series Inside Job and Truth Be Told.
Close picked up an Academy Award and Golden Globe nomination for her role in the movie, which was directed by Adrian Lyne and written by James Dearden. The movie was said to have done for adultery what Jaws did for swimming in the ocean.
Paramount+ has been rapidly expanding its roster of original programs, which includes Happy Face, The Good Fight and Evil (all from Robert and Michelle King); the Alex Kurtzman-led Star Trek franchise and the upcoming The Offer, The Game, Mayor of Kingstown, Yellowstone prequel 1883 and Showtime import Halo.
The role of Dan, originated by Michael Douglas has not been cast. No premiere date has been set.
