Love and Clippers: Scientists Use ‘Fingernails’ to Predict Future Romantic Happiness in New Dystopian Sci-Fi Romance from Apple TV+
Do you trust science to guide your love life? To determine who is (or isn’t) your soulmate?
That’s the quandary Anna (Jessie Buckley, Women Talking, Men) and Ryan (Jeremy Allen White, The Bear) find themselves in in the new movie Fingernails. They think they have found true love, proven so by a controversial new technology that reads a fingernail (ripped from the nail bed!) of potential couples, and determines whether their romance will succeed or fail.
Then Anna takes a position at a love testing institute, where she meets Amir (Rez Ahmed, Sound of Metal) and her doubts increase exponentially, as does her desire for Amir. Soon, she is questioning her relationship with Ryan and wondering whether the test results can change over time — and whether romantic chemistry can sometimes defy science.
Annie Murphy and Luke Wilson also star in the film, will stream on Apple TV+ beginning on November 3rd.
Fingernails is the second feature and first English-language film from director, writer and producer Christos Nikou, whose directorial debut was with the critically acclaimed Apples. Fingernails was co-written by Nikou, Stavros Raptis and Sam Steiner.
Why use fingernails, instead of, say, tea leaves or blood samples? In addition to their proximity to our ring fingers, which according to legend has a vein that goes directly to the heart, there’s more symbolism at play.
“The whole idea came when I, personally, was trying to think: What is love?” Nikou said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “Then, of course, I was seeing people around me that were looking for love in a different way than I was thinking, whether it be by using dating apps, by using social media, or other things. But they were using their fingers to just swipe right and left in order to find love.”
Actor Cate Blanchett is on board as a producer, in addition to Nikou. Andrew Upton and Coco Francini for Dirty Films and Lucas Wiesendanger for FilmNation Entertainment are also producing, and FilmNation Entertainment’s Glen Basner, Milan Popelka and Alison Cohen, serve as Executive Producers alongside Ashley Fox, Kevin Lafferty and Jerome Duboz.
