Marvel is (naturally) using its SDCC panels to showcase its live-action slate of movies and shows, but there’s more to the Marvel story.

The comic movie conglomerate showed off their new line of animated shows at San Diego Comic Con, including a second season of What If…?, the first animated Marvel show new to Disney+. They also will be adding a few more titles, including Spider-Man: Freshman Year, Marvel Zombies, I Am Groot season 2 and an X-Men ’97 revival.

I Am Groot is coming first. It’s a series of shorts showcasing the misadventures of Baby Groot as he gets into various situations of danger and mischief. This will premiere on August 10th on Disney+.

Spider-Man: Freshman Year will be prequel series showcasing how the MCU Peter Parker got to where he is today. It will, of course, show his freshman year of highschool as he tries to find his role as a hero. This show seems like it wants to treat itself as canon, but I have some doubts about that. They’ve shown that they will be including characters like Norman Osborn, aka The Green Goblin and Doctor Otto Octavius, aka Doctor Octopus, two characters MCU Peter seemingly meets for the first time in the film Spider-Man: No Way Home from last year. Maybe some more details will come soon and make these aspects more clear. Spider-Man Freshman Year will air in 2024, with an unknown number of episodes right now.

What If…? Season 2 will premiere in 2023, with a new array of different universes to explore. The viewers will once again be accompanied by The Watcher, the cosmic being who looked upon these alternate realities and guided the viewe through them. No information is clear on if this new season will use the same combination of returning MCU actors as the voices of their characters or use new ones.

Speaking of What If…?, a new show has sprouted from one of its many stories. Marvel Zombies is a series based on the What If…? episode with the same premise, both of which inspired by the comic of the same name. It will get its own series all to itself now, opeing up the potential for other What If…? Season one or season two episodes to get series based on their plots. This series has been confirmed to be the first Rated R Disney+ project to be put on the platform, opening the door for potentially more R-rated projects in the future of the MCU.

X-Men ’97, a classic fan-favorite animated series is going to be brought back for all new stories in 2023. This show is using the same era and setting as the original, along with the main line-up of X-Men favorites like Professor X, Wolverine, Jean Grey, Cyclops and many others. It is unclear how many original voices will be returning, but to refresh your memory on them, the classic series has been put on Disney+ now for you to watch before the new series debuts.

That’s all for Marvel’s upcoming animated series, Disney+ is going to have a lot to offer in these next couple years, and they are certainly keeping animated series as a welcome and supported medium to explore and use when the moment arises.
