Ms. Marvel is ready for the spotlight.

In the trailer, Iman Vellani makes her debut appearance as Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American teen who lives in Jersey City. She loves drawing, comics, and daydreaming and is an avid Captain Marvel fan, but she doesn’t think she has a chance to help save the world.

“I spend too much time in fantasy land,” Kamala says in the trailer. “It’s not really the brown girls from Jersey City who save the world.”

Events will prove her wrong, as the show gives us Ms. Marvel’s origin story, from attaining her cosmic powers to fighting against the bad guys.

In the comics, Kamala is later revealed to be an Inhuman, a race of humans descended from genetically-enhanced forebears who can manifest powers when exposed to a substance known as the Terrigen Mists. Those superpowers are similar to those of Ant-Man in that she can change the size of her body or just one part of it, like turning her hand into a huge fist.

The trailer teases that Ms. Marvel’s powers will slightly differ in the live-action adaptation. It looks like Kamala’s powers are similar to Doctor Strange’s, in that she is seen manipulating energy into blasts, forcefields, and stepping stones.

In the comics, Kamala inherits the mantle of Ms. Marvel from Carol Danvers, and is mentored by Captain Marvel. After the conclusion of the series, Vellani as Khan will make her debut in the MCU, joining Brie Larson (Captain Marvel) and Teyonah Parris (WandaVision) as Monica Rambeau in the upcoming feature The Marvels.

In addition to Vellani, the cast also includes Aramis Knight, Saagar Shaikh, Rish Shah, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Matt Lintz, Yasmeen Fletcher, Laith Nakli, Azhar Usman, Travina Springer, and Nimra Bucha. Bisha K. Ali serves as the series’ executive producer and head writer. The six-episode series premieres on June 8th, with new episodes likely dropping weekly.
