Amazon Studios is leaning into another mythic adventure.

Amazon’s Prime Video, which adapted stories from J.R.R. Tolkein to craft an epic Lord of the Rings prequel series, is now going the videogame route by developing a series based on Sony PlayStation’s award-winning quester God of War. Sony is co-producing along with Amazon.

Rafe Judkins, who headed up the Wheel of Time adaptation for Amazon will serve as showrunner, and Oscar nominees Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children of Men, Iron Man, The Expanse) are writing and executive producing with Judkins. The show will follow Kratos, the God of War, who, after exiling himself from his blood-soaked past in ancient Greece, hangs up his weapons forever in the Norse realm of Midgard.

The logline of the show reads, “When his beloved wife dies, Kratos sets off on a dangerous journey with his estranged son to spread her ashes from the highest peak – his wife’s final wish. Kratos soon realises the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one which will test the bonds between father and son, and force Kratos to battle new gods and monsters for the fate of the world.”

The God of War franchise comes from Sony’s Santa Monica Studio and includes seven games that span four PlayStation consoles. It launched in 2005 on the PlayStation 2, with the first God of War. At the center is ex-Spartan warrior Kratos and his perilous journey to exact revenge on Ares, the Greek God of War, after killing his loved ones under the deity’s influence. After becoming God of War himself, Kratos finds himself constantly looking for a chance to change his fate.

“The God of War is a compelling, character-driven franchise that we believe will captivate our global customers as much with its expansive and immersive worlds as its rich storytelling,” said Vernon Sanders, head of global television at Amazon Studios said in a statement. “We are honored to share in the adventure of exploring the God of War mythology in such a momentous way with Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Santa Monica Studio.”

The 2018 release for the PlayStation 4 won numerous awards, including game of the year at the Game Awards. The most recent game in the series, God of War Ragnarok, debuted in November.

God of War is the latest in a line of series based on video games now in the development or in production, including Amazon’s Fallout adaptation from Westworld creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, The Last of Us at HBO Max, based on another PlayStation property., Paramount+’s Halo, and the Anthony Mackie-led Twisted Metal at Peacock, among others.

There is no projected launch date in sight yet for the series.
