If anyone is fit to step into Tom Hanks’ cleats, it’s Nick Offerman.

The Parks and Recreation veteran will star in the upcoming Amazon Prime series A League of Their Own as Casey “Dove” Porter in the show from creators Abbi Jacobson (Broad City) and Will Graham (Mozart in the Jungle).

The hour-long, live-action series, an updated take on the 1992 movie of the same name starring Geena Davis, focuses on the women of the Rockford Peaches, a team in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, who played games from 1943 through 1954. The league began during World War II while regular baseball league play was suspended due to so many of the athletes serving overseas.

Offerman plays the coach of the team, the role played by Tom Hanks in the movie. Also starring are Jacobson, Chanté Adams, D’Arcy Carden, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Roberta Colindrez, Kelly McCormack, Priscilla Delgado, Molly Ephraim, Kate Berlant, and Melanie Field.

According to Amazon, Offerman’s character is described as a former Cubs pitcher who is brought in to coach the Peaches. The character got his nickname when his forkball killed a dove in mid-air during a game. Inspiring and charismatic, Dove could have been the next big Major League star, but blew his arm out after three years. Now he’s looking to make his comeback by turning the Peaches into champions.

Offerman tweeted out his feelings about the casting news, acknowledging his status as both America’s sweetheart and as a replacement for Hanks.

Amazon says the reinterpretation of the film will “evoke the joyful spirit of Penny Marshall’s beloved classic while widening the lens to tell the story of an entire generation of women who dreamed of playing professional baseball. The show takes a deeper look at race and sexuality, following the journey of a whole new ensemble of characters as they carve their own paths towards the field, both in the League and outside of it.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Graham and Jacobson reached out to Marshall (before her passing in December 2018) and Davis ahead of time to get their blessing for the Amazon reboot.

No premiere date has been announced for the series.
