On Your Marks: Comedy Central to Debut ‘Office Race’ with Beck Bennett and Joel McHale on Labor Day
Joel McHale is playing another bad boss.
After his turn as a nightmarish head chef on FX’s The Bear, McHale is back in the boss’ chair in Comedy Central’s new movie Office Race, which also stars former Saturday Night Live star Beck Bennett.
The movie focuses on an unambitious office worker (Bennett) who goes to great lengths—marathon lengths, if you will—to one-up his exercise-obsessed, micromanaging boss (McHale).
Bennett plays Pat, a passionless wimp who coasts aimlessly through life until he’s goaded into running a marathon where he discovers an affinity for running. Animal Control and Community star McHale will play Spencer, Pat’s supervisor, who’s a brown-nosing fitness fanatic with no self-awareness and an addiction to a quasi-legal sports drink.
This is Bennett’s first major on-screen role since leaving SNL in 2021.
Buffy The Vampire star Alyson Hannigan will play Girlfriend Pat, Pat’s sweetheart who also just happens to be named Pat, and who is tired of Pat’s lackadaisical approach to life. Frasier’s Kelsey Grammer plays Coach B, a former high-school track coach who owns a local running store and Curb Your Enthusiasm star J.B. Smoove will play Harry, a former world champion race-walker, who thumbs his nose at running…and runners.
Office Race also features Kylie Bunbury (Big Sky), Erinn Hayes (A Christmas Story Christmas), Geoffrey Arend (500 Days of Summer), Katlyn Carlson (iCarly), Matt Richards (That Damn Michael Che) and Karolena Theresa (You Hurt My Feelings).
The film, which debuts on September 4th on Comedy Central (check your local listings for times), is directed by newcomer Jared Lapidus, who wrote it with Impractical Jokers writer James Kilmoon. It marks their feature film debut. The movie was filmed before the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes.
