After a few series playing a super-charged villain on The Boys, Jensen Ackles returns for a role more akin to Dean Winchester on Supernatural: a hunter of evil.

Ackles will star in the crime thriller Rules of Prey for MGM+. Filming has already started, according to some eagle-eyed Ackles fans who spotted the actor filming exteriors in Toronto, Canada, which is standing in for the show’s Minneapolis location.

Rules of Prey is based on the first book in a series about a hotshot detective who was the Minneapolis Police Department who is “drawn out of seclusion back into law enforcement to investigate a series of confounding murders designed to send a message specifically to him. When an ingenious serial killer begins murdering Minneapolis citizens, Davenport, a brilliant polymath and unconventional investigator, takes the case, sparking an intense psychological duel with an equally intelligent adversary. As Davenport deciphers the killer’s twisted moral code and personal vendetta, he must match wits with a predator operating by his own rules of justice, risking everything to stop a killer who sees their conflict as the ultimate game,” according to the show’s official description.

The books were written by John Sandford, whose real name is John Roswell Camp. He’s a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and author from the Twin Cities, who has thus far written 36 books in the Prey series, all of which sport that word in the title. Rules of Prey was published in 1989, and the most recent book, Revenge Prey, was released this spring. Previous adaptations of Sandford’s books have starred Eriq LaSalle and Mark Harmon as Lucas Davenport.

Ackles has done many projects for Amazon, which aired The Boys and will air the upcoming prequel series Vought Rising, where he will reprise his Soldier Boy character. In addition, Ackles starred in and executive produced Countdown. He also stars in CBS’s Tracker, which will air its fourth season soon. Ackles will also executive produce Rules of Prey. Bruce Terris will serve as showrunner.

Further details like casting and a release date are TBD for Rules of Prey, but filming is set to wrap in December of this year.
