Only Monsters Play God: See Jacob Elordi Transformed into the Creature in Netflix’s ‘Frankenstein’

Like his character Victor Frankenstein, the director of a Netflix movie about one of the most famous movie monsters had to move quickly to assemble his creature.
Guillermo del Toro only had 9 weeks to transform Jacob Elordi into Frankenstein’s monster after Andrew Garfield dropped out of the role due to schedule conflicts. Netflix released some images from the filming of Frankenstein, due out in November.
Del Toro and makeup artist Mike Hill (The Shape of Water, Nightmare Alley) had spent nine months designing Garfield’s look as Frankenstein’s monster only to have to start all over again in a much shorter time frame.
Del Toro, who has directed Pan’s Labyrinth and Pinocchio, adapted the 1818 novel by Mary Shelley. He told Vanity Fair that the change was actually a blessing.
“Andrew Garfield stepping out and Jacob coming in. I mean, it was like Jacob is the most perfect actor for the creature,” del Toro said. “And we have a supernaturally good connection. It’s like, very few words. Very few things I have to say, and he does it… We recast, and we had nine weeks [to get the look down]. You can’t be under more pressure than that.”

Oscar Issac portrays Victor Frankenstein and Mia Goth plays his fiancée Elizabeth. Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Christian Convery, Charles Dance and Christoph Waltz also star.
Frankenstein will premiere in November on Netflix, but will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival followed by a limited theatrical run.
