‘Only Murders In The Building’ Reveals Season 3 Casting Shocker and Paul Rudd’s Douchey ‘do
Selena Gomez revealed via social media on Tuesday that a little-known actor named Meryl Streep is joining the cast for season three.
The multi-Oscar winner joins the cast in an undisclosed role. Gomez’s video also revealed that Paul Rudd was on set. Rudd played actor Ben Glenroy, who died on stage in the first few minutes of director Oliver’s (Martin Short) Broadway comeback play.
“Hey guys, we’re on set. What are we shooting?” Gomez teased in the video while moving her phone to either side of her to show her co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short. “The gang is back,” she said, revealing Andrea Martin, who joined the show in its second season.
“Could this honestly get any better? Oh wait,” Gomez said before turning her phone to reveal Rudd sitting at the end other end of the couch from the three main stars.Â
“Well, I do think it could get a little bit better,” Rudd dead-panned before Streep popped her head up from behind the couch, fluffing up a pillow behind Steve Martin. Then she asked the cast if they needed anything ele.
“Just the tea that I asked for a half hour ago,” Short joked to Streep, who asked if Gomez needed anything.
“I’m okay. Thank you, ma’am. You’re sweet,” Gomez then tells Streep, before visibly reacting to Streep by opening her mouth in shock.
Martin also posted a black and white photo of himself with Short, Gomez, Streep and Rudd, calling them a “cast to dream of.”Â
The role marks Streep’s return to television; she last appeared on the small screen in season two of HBO’s Big Little Lies. She has three Emmys to her credit: one for outstanding narrator for Netflix’s documentary Five Came Back (2017), and the others were for lead actress in a miniseries or movie for HBO’s Angels in America (2004) and lead actress in a limited series for Holocaust (1978).
Only Murders in the Building is Hulu’s most popular original comedy and was nominated for 17 Emmys after its first season, winning three (guest acting honors for Nathan Lane, outstanding production design and outstanding sound mixing). The show spent nine weeks on Nielsen’s top 10 streaming series chart in 2022, drawing 3.67 billion minutes of viewing time in that span.
In other news, an image released from the series shows Rudd in character as Ben, sporting bleached highlights and a leather jacket and joined by a new character played by Caitlin Hammond of Netflix’s The Watcher.
In the season 2 finale, Charles and Ben bicker before the show, and Charles warns Ben to “stay away from her,” and issues a sinister threat, saying “I know what you did.”
Season three will explore the mystery of who Ben was and why he died. Grey’s Anatomy star Jesse Williams will also join the cast, which also includes Tina Fey, Vanessa Aspillaga, Adina Verson, and Ryan Broussard.
No premiere date for season three has been announced yet, but it is expected sometime around this summer.
