Elizabeth Banks to Produce ‘Pitch Perfect’ Sitcom Adaptation Starring Adam Devine for Peacock
Peacock is bringing the a capella movie sensation Pitch Perfect to the small screen.
Peacock, which has been cornering the market lately on musical series (Girls5Eva, We Are Lady Parts), film to series adaptations (Field of Dreams, Ted) and nostalgia-friendly rebooted series (Punky Brewster, Saved by the Bell), is the pitch perfect streaming service to show a television adaptation of the hit movie, which starred Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson and Adam Devine. (It also doesn’t hurt that NBC parent company Universal released the film.)
The streaming adaptation will star Adam Devine, and will be set several years after the events of the films. It will be produced by Elizabeth Banks, who starred in and produced the films and directed the second movie in the series.
Additional Executive Producers include Max Handelman for Brownstone Productions, Paul Brooks and Scott Neimeyer for Gold Circle Films, and Devine and Megan Amram.
Devine returns as Bumper Allen, and the series starts when he moves to Germany to revive his music career when one of his songs becomes big in Berlin. In the first film, Bumper was a bad guy – the leader of the all-male a cappella group The Treblemakers. He returned in the second film as a supporting character and the love interest of Rebel Wilson’s character, Fat Amy, and worked as a backup singer for John Mayer before returning to his alma mater as a security guard.
The film series, which grossed over $600M, began in 2012 and followed Barden University’s all-girl a cappella singing group, The Barden Bellas, as they compete against another a cappella group from their college to win the National competition.
The new series should feature a lot of toe-tapping musical numbers for fans of a capella music.
Susan Rovner, Chairman of Entertainment Content at NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, said in a statement, “when we saw the opportunity to create a series for Pitch Perfect with Elizabeth Banks, Max Handelman and Paul Brooks plus more earworm classics for super fans to enjoy, we jumped at it. And to top it off, we are so fortunate that Adam Devine is headlining the series and bringing fans the quirky, laugh-out-loud sensibility they loved in the film franchise.”
“We’re so happy to have the opportunity to bring the beloved Universal Pictures franchise Pitch Perfect to the small screen and to explore the hilarious and distinct characters in this (musical-filled) world,” added Erin Underhill, President of Universal Television.
