Maya Rudolph had to postpone work on her own show to do it, but the chance to portray the woman who might be the first female, Asian-American and Black president of the United States could very well be worth it.

Rudolph, who won an Emmy in 2024 as a guest actress, is returning to Saturday Night Live to step back into the role that won her the award, that of current Vice President Kamala Harris. Rudolph was a member of the SNL main cast from 2000 to 2007.

In order to step into the VP and presumptive presidential nominee’s shoes though, Rudolph had to clear her schedule, which meant postponing the shooting of the third season of her own Apple TV+ series Loot, orginally scheduled to begin on August 26th. According to Deadline, the cast and crew of the comedy series, which Rudolph stars in and executive produces, were told earlier this week that production has been pushed for scheduling reasons.

Loot is produced by Universal Television, which owns NBC and produces SNL.

Cast member Punkie Johnson, who also portrayed Harris, won’t be doing so again, at least not on SNL. The comedian announced Thursday that the previous season, her fourth with the show and her second as a main cast member, would be her last.

She posted on her Instagram that “After four seasons, I will not be returning to SNL for the 50th,” she said.

“It’s no bad blood, it’s no bridges burnt, it’s no hard feelings,” she added. “SNL was a dream I didn’t even know I could achieve. I was part of one of the most elite institutions in comedy, and I’m so grateful for it… but my time there has come to an end.”
