Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement have brought the Pythonesque cult classic film Time Bandits from 1981 to the present day.

But rather than make another movie, Waititi and Clement have created a series from the film about a young boy who meets a group of time-traveling rogues who use his bedroom wardrobe as an egress through time.

The 10-episode series sends him, and us, on an “unpredictable journey through time and space with a ragtag group of thieves and their newest recruit: an 11-year-old history buff named Kevin (Kal-El Tuck). Together, they set out on a thrilling quest to save the boy’s parents — and the world,” according to the official synopsis.

Lisa Kudrow, who is returning to the small screen with a full-time role in a live-action TV series after her much-lauded roles in Friends, The Comeback and Web Therapy, plays Penelope, the erstwhile leader of the bandits.

Clement and Waititi, who worked together on the film What We Do in the Shadows, created the series with Iain Morris. The series jumps from the origins of Stonehenge, to the gifting of the infamous Trojan Horse, and shows battling dinosaurs, medieval battles, a cold sliver of the Ice Age, and the golden age of the Harlem Renaissance, among other destinations.

In addition to Kudrow and Tuck, the series will star Tadhg Murphy (Conversations With Friends), Roger Jean Nsengiyumva (You Don’t Know Me), Rune Temte (Eddie the Eagle), Charlyne Yi (Knocked Up), Rachel House (Heartbreak High), Kiera Thompson (Martyrs Lane), James Dryden (Ready Player One), Felicity Ward (The Office Australia), Francesca Mills (Harlots) and Imaan Hadchiti (Thor: Love and Thunder).

Waititi and Clement will appear in guest roles.

The original Time Bandits movie was directed by Terry Gilliam and starred Monty Python troupers John Cleese and Michael Palin along with Sean Connery, Shelly Duvall and Katherine Helmond.

Time Bandits premieres the first two of its ten episodes on Apple TV+ on July 24th, followed by two new episodes each Wednesday through August 21st.
