Russian Revolutionary: Showtime Previews Ewan McGregor’s New Miniseries ‘A Gentleman in Moscow’
Ewan MacGregor’s new series for Showtime is a family affair.
MacGregor plays Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov, a Russian Count sentenced to house arrest at a most arresting location; the Hotel Metropol, a grand Russian establishment, in A Gentleman in Moscow. MacGregor’s wife Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays the Count’s sometime-companion, Anna Urbanova.
Based on the best-selling and critically-applauded novel by Amor Towles, A Gentleman in Moscow, set in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, tells the story of Rostov, a nobleman arrested by the Bolsheviks and sentenced to the relatively mild penance of house arrest, which makes Rostov a permanent guest at the luxurious Hotel Rostov – albeit in the servant’s quarters.
Winstead’s Anna is an actress and frequent guest at the Metropol who befriends the count. Rostov’s life also becomes intertwined with that of a motherless young girl, Nina (Alexa Goodall), who frequents the hotel, creating a sort of family unit there with Anna and the Count.
The novel, which came out in 2016, was optioned for the small screen in 2017, with Kenneth Branagh originally attached to play the count. In 2022, McGregor was announced as Branagh’s replacement, with Ben Vanstone serving as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Sam Miller directed, and filming took place in Manchester, with Victoria Square standing in for Moscow. Lionsgate Television is the studio behind the project.
The rest of the cast includes Leah Harvey, Johnny Harris, Paul Ready and John Heffernan.
The eight-part series is coming to Showtime on March 29th, streaming on Paramount+.
