Selma Blair and Sarah Michelle Gellar about to recreate their iconic “Cruel Intentions” kiss for MTV

Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair recreated their notorious Cruel Intentions kiss for the 2020 MTV Movie and TV Awards, but with a 2020 twist.

In fact, the entire awards show had a twist. This year, MTV opted instead to award not stars from this year’s productions, but the ‘Greatest of All Time’ in various categories.

The 90-minute program aired Sunday and honored the biggest and best moments in film and TV from the 80s until now, according to MTV. Vanessa Hudgens hosted the ceremony that was largely virtual: honorees were given their award at their locations.

‘GOAT’ awards went to Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween) as the ‘Scream Queen’, William Zabka (Cobra Kai) as the ‘Zero to Hero’ and Kevin Bacon (Footloose) won the ‘Dance Your Ass Off’ award.

Selma Blair and Sarah Michelle Gellar, who co-starred in the 1999 movie Cruel Intentions, received the ‘Legendary Lip Lock’ popcorn statuette, and 21 years later, thanked their fans for remembering the kiss. The two won an MTV Movie & TV Award for best kiss at the time.

Gellar said the iconic kiss is now the “single-most awarded kiss in cinema history — you don’t have to Google it, I already did.”

Blair said the kiss “has resonated with people so long is not just for the initial shock value, but because it was a catalyst for so many young people to help them realize certain aspects of their sexuality and help make people comfortable to be who they really are.”

“It also represented a paradigm shift to a new dynamic towards acceptance in pop culture,” said Gellar, before adding, “Well, also it was super-hot.”

“You’re not wrong,” Blair agreed with a laugh, and then the two “recreated” the kiss, turning to each other and leaning in for a smooch, only to be blocked by a sheet of Plexiglas.
