What’s Stephen King’s scariest story? According to him, it’s Pet Sematary.

Now Paramount+ is giving the master of horror a chance to expand on that world. The streamer is releasing a film that serves as a prequel to King’s 1983 novel Pet Sematary, based on a “hidden chapter” from the book.

Director Lindsey Beer’s movie takes place in 1969, where “a young Jud Crandall has dreams of leaving his hometown of Ludlow, Maine behind, but soon discovers sinister secrets buried within and is forced to confront a dark family history that will forever keep him connected to Ludlow. Banding together, Jud and his childhood friends must fight an ancient evil that has gripped Ludlow since its founding, and once unearthed has the power to destroy everything in its path,” according to the film’s official description.

The novel has been adapted to screen twice, first in 1989, and a remake of that film was released in 2019. Pet Sematary Two, a sequel to the first movie, came out in 1992.

The movie’s cast includes David Duchovny and Pam Grier, along with Henry Thomas (The Fall of the House of Usher), Jackson White (Tell Me Lies), Forrest Goodluck (The Revenant), Jack Mulhern (Mare of Easttown), Natalie Alyn Lind (The Goldbergs) and Isabella Star LaBlanc (True Detective: Night Country).

The film was written by Beer and Jeff Buhler, and Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian produced. The Paramount+ original movie was made in association with Paramount Pictures’ Players Label and is a Di Bonaventura Pictures Production.

Just in time for Spooky Season, Pet Sematary will be part of the Paramount+ Peak Screaming collection which curates horror movies and Halloween episodes from TV series. It will debut on October 6th in the U.S., Canada, Latin America and Brazil, and will be avaliable the following day in other international markets.
