Take the Field: ‘Friday Night Lights’ Will Shine Again As Reboot Plans For Beloved Series Revealed
Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose!
That affirmation could someday soon echo from your television sets, but this time a new coach and team will be repeating that mantra. A new iteration of the football drama is in pre-production planning at Universal, with Jason Katims, Pete Berg and Brian Grazer, the co-creators of the first Friday Night Lights series returning for the reboot, on board to produce, according to Deadline.
The reboot looks to be a new story with new characters, but still set in the world of Texas high school football, and is in the planning stages. Peacock, Netflix, and Amazon are all said to be in a bidding war to stream the new series.
The original Friday Night Lights series ran for five seasons, from 2006-11, on NBC and DirecTV’s 101 Network. The show was led by Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton along with many talented young actors who went on to greater success, like Taylor Kitsch, Jesse Plemons, Zach Gilford, Minka Kelly, Gaius Charles, Adrianne Palicki and Michael B. Jordan.
Friday Night Lights is inspired by a 1990 nonfiction book by H.G. “Buzz” Bissinger about the football team at Permian High School in Odessa, Texas. Berg directed and co-wrote a 2004 feature film adaptation of the book, the success of which led to the series. and created and executive produced the show, set in the fictional and football-crazy town of Dillon, Texas.
