Talking Ted: Looking Ahead to Season Two, Three and Maybe Beyond
Ted Lasso, the show that gave us reason to hope during the hell that was 2020, is coming back for a second and even a third season. But will there be more?
The second season of the moving and inspirational (yet still very funny) comedy debuts July 23rd, and a third season is a go, though no date has been announced for that yet. Season two will have 12 episodes, an increase from 10 in season one. Is more always better? Jason Sudeikis, who stars as the title character, recently commented on the idea of Ted Lasso going longer than planned.
Sudeikis, who co-created the show, told Entertainment Weekly that “the story that I know is the one that I wanted to tell, and so that’s the one we’re telling with the help of numerous people in front of and behind the camera, so it’s by no means me typing every key stroke and saying every word. It’s nowhere near like that. But the story that’s being told – that three-season arc – is one that I see, know, and understood. I’m glad that they are willing to pay for those three seasons. As far as what happens after that, who knows? I don’t know.”
“The initial story Jason had in his head is a three-season arc, [but] I’m hopeful there’s more Ted Lasso stories to tell after three seasons,” executive producer Bill Lawrence added. “Hey, in my head, I’m like, Ted Lasso moves home and he should coach the professional team that’s a block away from Jason’s home in real life.”
Second season episode synopses haven’t been released, but taking off from the end of season one, the show should focus on what happens to the AFC Richmond team after they were relegated out of the Premier League following their heartbreaking loss to Manchester City in the season one finale.
The show is adding a new character into the mix as well: Sarah Niles will play Sharon, a sports psychologist who is brought in to help break AFC Richmond’s unlucky streak and looks to be the only one on the team not charmed by Ted. She joins returning cast members Brendan Hunt, who plays Ted’s second-in-command Coach Beard; Phil Dunster as hotshot superstar Jamie Tartt; Juno Temple as PR whiz Keeley; Hannah Waddingham, as AFC Richmond owner Rebecca Welton and Brett Goldstein as Roy Kent, a gruff, aging veteran player.
Ted Lasso premiered in August 2020 on the streaming service Apple TV+ and has been raking in awards along with viewer goodwill. It recently triumphed at the 2021 Critics Choice Awards sweeping every category it was nominated in and securing wins for Best Comedy Series, Best Actor for Jason Sudeikis and Best Supporting Actress for Hannah Waddingham. Sudeikis also won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series and a Golden Globe Award in the Best Comedy Actor category.
The series received two Writers Guild Awards for Best New Series and Best Comedy Series, nominations from the Producers Guild of America for Comedy Series on top of honors from many other guild and critics groups. Ted Lasso was also the only comedy series honored as an AFI Program of the Year and has regularly appeared on television critics’ “Best of 2020” lists.
