Behind the makeup, every clown is a real person, and that probably is true for Pennywise.

The terrifying child-eating clown from author Stephen King’s It may finally get to tell his own story in Welcome to Derry (working title), a new series in development at HBO Max. The show’s timeline begins in the 1960s leading up to the events in 2017’s It: Part One movie.

The project will be written and executive produced by Jason Fuchs. Andy Muschietti, director of It: Part One and It: Part Two, and Barbara Muschietti executive produce for Warner Bros.

The show will delve into the backstory of both the Maine town that wound up haunted by Pennywise, a murderous, shape-shifting creature that most often appears as a clown, as well as the origin of the hideous clown-beast himself.

Variety reports that the Muschiettis and Fuchs developed the story for the show with Fuchs writing the script. Andy would also direct the first episode should the project go to series. the  A writers’ room is now open.

The two new It films collectively grossed over $1.1 billion globally, and the second film took place 27 years after the events of the first, with a new adult cast playing the grown up kids from part one. The story was previously adapted into a two-part miniseries for ABC back in 1990, with Tim Curry playing the part of Pennywise. Bill Skarsgård took on the part for both of the recent adaptations.
