Tiger King, the series that got us through the very first weeks of the pandemic-induced lockdown is returning with a sequel, presumably to get us through a few weeks of 2022’s lingering pandemic lifestyle.

Thursday, Netflix announced they were bringing back the characters that delighted, confused and appalled us in a sequel to the first series, tentatively called Tiger King 2.

The first season of the series, Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness, followed the story of Joseph “Joe Exotic” Maldonado-Passage, who lived with his collection of tigers and other big cats at Tiger King Park in Oklahoma.

It also documented Maldonado-Passage’s obsession with Carole Baskin, a fellow exotic animal park owner who consistently lobbied for Maldonado-Passage’s park to be shut down. Maldonado-Passage was sentenced to 22 years in federal prison after being convicted of attempting to hire someone to kill his rival.

The show, which premiered on Netflix on March 20, 2020, was viewed in 64 million households in the first four weeks after its premiere, according to Netflix, making it a bit of a sensation. The show launched millions of memes and social media posts based on the sheer weirdness of nearly everyone involved in the production.

Tiger King 2, will once again be directed by Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin, and will feature even “more madness and mayhem,” according to the streamer.

In a video released to promote Netflix’s upcoming true crime show slate, clips from the upcoming season appear to show Baskin walking inside the U.S. Capitol, Maldonado-Passage on the phone in prison and a billboard asking who killed Don Lewis, the founder of Big Cat Rescue and husband of Baskin, who mysteriously disappeared in 1997.

For her part, Baskin said she was not interested in participating in the sequel. She confirmed to Fox Business on Thursday that the directors approached her about participating in the sequel.

“Rebecca Chaiklin said she wanted to ‘clean the air’ about what they did to me in Tiger King. I told her to lose my number,” said Baskin, the owner of Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, Florida.

Netflix has not yet announced a release date for the sequel series.
