The Sands Through The Hourglass Have Almost Run Out For ‘Days Of Our Lives’ On Broadcast TV
Marlena and Roman and friends are moving to a new home. No, they aren’t leaving Salem, state unknown, but they are moving to Peacock.
NBC announced Wednesday that the veteran soap opera, which has been on the network for 57 years since its debut in 1965, will now only be available on its streaming platform Peacock. New episodes of Days of Our Lives will debut beginning September 12th.
The show, which has outlasted nearly every other daytime drama, will be replaced by NBC News Daily, an hour-long news program which NBC says will “provide signature world-class reporting and breaking news coverage in a first-of-its kind, live in most markets mid-day news offering.”
“With a large percentage of the Days of Our Lives audience already watching digitally, this move enables us to build the show’s loyal fanbase on streaming while simultaneously bolstering the network daytime offering with an urgent, live programming opportunity for partners and consumers,” Mark Lazarus, chairman of NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, said in a press release.
Days has produced two spinoffs for Peacock, dubbed Beyond Salem.
This leaves only only three daytime soaps on broadcast TV: General Hospital, which airs on ABC, and The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful, which air on CBS. Y&R remains the most-watched soap in daytime (3.7 million), with Bold second and GH third.
