The stakes couldn’t be higher for a show about teens taking karate lessons.

In Netflix’s Cobra Kai, which has evolved from a karate-based teen drama to a blood-and-guts war-to-end-all-wars, the dojos run by Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and John Kreese (Martin Kove) are still at odds, but new enemies and allies are joining the fray in Season 5.

In the trailer for the new season, which dropped Tuesday, former enemies must put aside their differences as Daniel, Johnny and Chozen Toguchi (Yuji Okumoto) face off against the evil Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith), who now has complete control of Cobra Kai after he put Kreese on ice at the end of last season.

In the trailer, we see that Silver plans to expand his karate empire, Darth Vader-style, across and beyond the San Fernando Valley. Silver hires instructors from the dark side of karate to give lessons in how not to fight fair to legions of new stormtroopers…er, students, and Johnny, Daniel et al can’t let that go unchecked.

The Cobra Kai First Look also gives a glimpse Kreese behind bars after Silver framed his one-time friend and war buddy in season four to keep him from messing up his karate franchise plans. Naturally, Kreese is far from a model prisoner.

With their senseis away on the front lines of good vs. evil, Miguel Diaz (Xolo Maridueña) and Robby Keene (Tanner Buchanan) have nothing better to do than spar at pool parties and other public places over the love rectangle involving them, Daniel’s daughter Sam (Mary Mouser), and bad girl Tory (Peyton List).

Courtney Henggeler, Jacob Bertrand, Vanessa Rubio and Rose Bianco also star in the series, which returns September 9th. The first four seasons of Cobra Kai, which is spun off from the Karate Kid film series, are available to stream there now.
