The producers of Saturday Night Live aren’t too good at taking directions.
Despite the imperative in the sketch comedy/viral video group’s name, “Please Don’t Destroy”, the producers of SNL made one member of the group, Ben Marshall, a main cast member of the venerable sketch comedy show for its upcoming 51st season.
Marshall joins other new featured cast members Tommy Brennan, Jeremy Culhane, Kam Patterson and Veronika Slowikowska.
Marshall, along with John Higgins and Martin Herlihy, were hired by the show in 2021, where they served as staff writers as well as performers, usually in their own digital short videos that often featured the hosts of the show. For next season, Herlihy will remain on the writing staff but Higgins has left the show to pursue other opportunities.
The other new featured cast members include Slowikowska, who has appeared in the Netflix workplace comedy Tires and the FX horror mockumentary series What We Do in the Shadows; Brennan, a standup comic from Minnesota who has performed on The Tonight Show, Culhane, a regular on the streaming service Dropout, and Patterson, a standup comic who appears on the podcast Kill Tony. Culhane, Slowikowska and Patterson all have a following on TikTok, where they produce comedy videos.
At least four cast members from last season are leaving SNL: Heidi Gardner, a veteran of eight seasons and the longest-tenured female actor on the show at the time of her departure,; Michael Longfellow, Emil Wakim, and Devon Walker. If no other cast members depart, this year’s cast will be larger than last year’s.
The new season of Saturday Night Live launches on October 4th.
