Tom Welling Teases Cast for Planned ‘Smallville’ Animated Series, Saying Allison Mack May Be “Tough To Get”
The Smallville gang – well, most of them – may be getting back together for a new animated series.
Smallville, which aired for ten years on The WB/The CW, is the longest-running DC Comics television show to date, and it may not be over yet. Star Tom Welling, who played Clark Kent on the series that traced Superman’s lengthy origin story, recently appeared at Fan Expo Vancouver, along with the show’s Lois Lane, Erica Durance. During a panel for Smallville, Welling talked about the potential animated series and his hopes to have most of the series’ original cast return.
Welling told the crowd, “we’re working on an animated series that picks up right after our Smallville [Season 10], and, again, telling our own story and our vision is that we get Erica… it might be tough to get Allison [Mack]… But even Sam Jones III (who played Clark’s friend Pete Ross) and Lionel Luthor [are] going to be a big part of that. John Glover wants to do it; we’ve already been into this.”
The Allison Mack comment had to have been a joke, as Mack is currently serving a three year sentence in prison for her involvement in procuring victims for the alleged sex cult NXIVM.
He went on, saying, “we’ve already gotten animation, we just don’t have the stories yet because Al [Gough] and Miles [Millar] are busy doing Tim Burton-like movies. As soon as they are done with that, we’re going to do this. I want to be Clark’s voice, I want Erica to be Lois’ voice, that’s going to be the fun of it. I think there’s a story that Al and Miles are going to tell that’s individual and new and call it a Multiverse thing. But let’s see where it goes, and it’ll be fun.”
Welling posted on Twitter last year that he and Michael Rosenbaum, who played Lex Luthor on the show, were working to bring the show back, so it is possible that Rosenbaum could be reprising his character as well, though Welling did not mention him.
Smallville premiered in 2001 and ran for 10 seasons before concluding in 2011. However, the animated series would not be the first time Smallville has returned since its series finale. A comic book series, Smallville: Season 11 ran from 2012-2015, which continued the story of Welling’s Clark Kent/Superman after the finale.
Welling and Durance later returned as Lois and Clark for the 2019 Arrowverse crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths, seen on multiple shows on The CW over a week. In the story, it was revealed that Clark had given up his powers and retired to raise his daughters with Lois.
Whatever is happening, it won’t be on our screens for a while, and there is no streaming service or network that has picked up the project yet. All ten seasons of Smallville are available to stream on Hulu right now, though.
