Jessica Alba’s new movie for Netflix answers the question: what if you took the basic plot of a Hallmark holiday movie, and added a lot of violence?

In Trigger Warning, Alba plays Parker, a woman who returns to her hometown after the death of her father. But Parker is not your average big-city girl trying to adjust to small-town life; she’s a former Special Forces commando with PTSD who finds herself trying to unravel the mystery behind her father’s death.

Parker takes over ownership of her father’s bar, learning that the town she left behind is now controlled by a violent gang. Soon she’s tangled up with Senator Swann (Anthony Michael Hall), one of the more powerful and corrupt men in her hometown, as well as his son Jesse (Mark Webber), who is also her former boyfriend. Oh, and he’s also the sheriff, who warns her to stop looking for trouble.

It’s not long (at least in the trailer) before Parker is in for the fight of her life, including one battle in the garden section of a hardware store – a battle Parker wins easily.

Without any allies in town, she must callupon help from her fellow soldier Spider (Tone Bell) and local drug dealer Mike (Gabriel Basso) to learn how her father died.

“I don’t think his death was an accident,” Alba says in the trailer. Later, she explains, “This is about more than just my dad. I need to know the truth.”
