The team behind What We Do in the Shadows is applying their irreverent take on vampires to the Frankenstein legend.
After commissioning a pilot last year, FX has given a series order to Very Young Frankenstein, to be produced by Stefani Robinson, Taika Waititi and Garrett Basch, who brought What We Do in the Shadows to FX, adapting it from the film 2014 film written and directed by Waititi and Jemaine Clement.
Very Young Frankenstein will be based on Mel Brooks’ 1974 cult classic Young Frankenstein, which starred Gene Wilder as Dr. Frederick Frankenstein, Peter Boyle as The Monster, Marty Feldman as Igor, and Teri Garr as Inga, along with Cloris Leachman, Madeleine Kahn and Gene Hackman.
Mel Brooks will serve as Executive Producer on Very Young Frankenstein, and Stefani Robinson wrote the pilot. Waititi will direct.
“Very Young Frankenstein blends inspiration from the fan-favorite movie with the inventive, irreverent spirit that has defined FX comedies over the years, making this a completely original take on the classic story,” said FX Entertainment president Nick Grad in a statement. “In the hands of FX veterans Stefani, Taika and Garrett, alongside the iconic Mel Brooks, we know that fans will have as much fun watching this series as we’re having making it,” he continued.
Zach Galifianakis will play the title character, and the show also stars Dolly Wells and Spencer House, Nikki Crawford, Kumail Nanjiani and Cary Elwes, who will reportedly play the President of the United States.
Plot details have yet to be revealed, nor is there a start date for Very Young Frankenstein, which will also stream on Hulu.
