Why has Netflix failed to give a second season renewal to one of its most popular shows of the past year? The reason, while still unknown, is leading to speculation that the show might be moving elsewhere.

Wednesday, the Tim Burton-directed series about the eldest child of the Addams Family, was a smash hit when it premiered on Netflix in November, closing out the year as the streamer’s top show, even beating out Stranger Things season 4. In addition to being one of the most-watched shows in the platform’s history, it was also a critical success with a dedicated young fanbase. However, Netflix has yet to issue the show an official renewal.

According to The Independent, this could be because the show is moving to Amazon Prime. One reason for this is that the rights to The Addams Family are owned by MGM, which merged with Amazon in 2022.

Netflix could still try to make a deal to retain the rights to their show, but the competitive nature of the two streaming services could mean that it won’t be an easy pickup.

Netflix’s Peter Friedlander, who oversees scripted series for the U.S. and Canada, recently said he was “optimistic” about the show’s future. Series showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar recently teased where they plan to take things in the second season, which includes exploring more of Wednesday’s (Jenna Ortega) unique relationship with Enid (Emma Myers), as well as with her mother, Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones).

“We wanna sort of explore and sort of complicate all of those relationships going forward,” the duo told THR. “The school was closed when they left, which gave us the most possibilities for season 2, and I think that’s something that we’re excited to explore. For us, the show also is really about this female friendship, with Wednesday and Enid really being at the center of that. The fact that they really connected with audiences, it has been really gratifying.”
