A Slice of Trouble: David Oyelowo Bites Off More Than He Can Handle in ‘Government Cheese’ from Apple TV+
Is it really possible to go straight after a life of crime?
Hampton Chambers (David Oyelowo) in Government Cheese, a new comedy from Apple TV+, would certainly like to return to the righteous path after his release from prison. He’s an inventor now, having developed a self-sharpening drill, and plans to give up the smash-and-grab life for good.
Predictably, though, he gets drawn back into the orbit of crime against his will, much to the dismay of his wife Astoria (Simone Missick), and sons Einstein (Evan Ellison) and Harrison (Jahi Di’Allo Winston) in this surreal, mid-century modern comedy coming to Apple TV+ next month.

The trailer, dropped Thursday, is full of madcap misadventures, all set to the bouncy tune of the song “Don’t Crowd Me” by Keith Kessler and The Impulses.
The show’s official logline reads, “Government Cheese is a surrealist family comedy set in 1969 San Fernando Valley that tells the story of the Chambers, a quirky family pursuing lofty and seemingly impossible dreams, beautifully unfettered by the realities of the world. When Hampton Chambers is released from prison, his long-awaited family reunion doesn’t go quite as he’d planned. During his absence, Hampton’s wife and sons have formed an unconventional family unit, and Hampton’s return spins their world into chaos.”
The ensemble cast also includes Bokeem Woodbine, Jeremy Bobb, Louis Cancelmi, Julien Heron, Djilali Rez-Kallah, Louis Ferreira, Thomas Beaudoin, Kyle Mac with John Ortiz and Adam Beach.
Oyelowo serves as executive producer, while series creators Paul Hunter and Aeysha Carr share showrunner duties. Hunter directs.

Government Cheese debuts the first four of its ten episodes on April 16th.
