Characters in the comics are immortal – and the same holds true for movies based on comic books.

This point was made emphatically with the release of a teaser from Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday released Tuesday.

In it, we see a man riding a motorcycle to a remote farmhouse as a plinky piano rendition of the Avengers theme plays in the background. The man hangs his helmet on his bike and goes inside the house, pausing to fondle a Captain America costume. Then we see that it’s Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, holding a newborn baby. As he smiles down on the infant, the words “Steve Rogers will return for Avengers: Doomsday” appear on screen. Then a countdown timer begins at the end so we can starting our wait for the minute the next Marvel movie hits theaters.

The trailer confirms what Evans has long been denying: that he’s returning to Team Avengers. During the press tour for The Materialists, Evans denied being cast in the movie, expressing regret that he was missing out. His return should be especially exciting given that Robert Downey Jr. is appearing not as Tony Stark/Iron Man, but as Victor Von Doom, the principal villain in the film.

Evans has been a part of the MCU for nearly 15 years. He first appeared as Captain America/Steve Rogers in the 2011 movie Captain America: The First Avenger and continued on in until 2019’s Avengers: Endgame where we saw the character as an elderly man, content to settle into family life with the woman he loved: Agent Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). Rogers passed on the Captain America shield to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson in the Disney/Marvel series Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Captain America: Brave New World.

The Russo Brothers, Joe and Anthony, are returning to the MCU for the first time since Endgame. They posted the teaser on Instagram Friday with the caption “The character that changed our lives. The story that brought us all here together. It was always going to come back to this…:

This is the same teaser now being shown in theaters, and which was leaked online a few days ago. It also won’t be the only Doomsday teaser released: there’s reportedly a Thor-themed one with Chris Hemsworth that will drop some time in the future.

Avengers: Doomsday is only a shade less than a year away from release. It’s due in theaters on December 18th, 2026.
