Keanu Reeves takes a 180 degree turn from his turn as lethal assassin John Wick to play a well-meaning, but rather awkward, guardian angel in the upcoming Good Fortune.

Written and directed by Aziz Ansari, who also plays the lead, Good Fortune follows a well-meaning but rather inept angel named Gabriel (Reeves) meddles in the lives of Arj, a struggling gig worker (Ansari) and Jeff, a wealthy venture capitalist (Seth Rogen).

In the trailer above, Reeves as angel Gabriel asks fellow angel Martha (Sandra Oh) for something more important to do than stopping people from texting and driving.

“Martha, is there any way I can have more meaningful duties?” Gabriel asks. “I want to guide people; I want to change their lives.”

Martha sends Gabriel out looking for a lost soul, and Gabriel finds Arj in a Denny’s parking lot in L.A, and Arj proves to be the project Gabriel was looking for – even if Arj objects to a “budget guardian angel’ who only stops road accidents.

Gabriel tries to show Arj that money can’t buy happiness by body-swapping him with his wealthy employer, Jeff, but that backfires when Arj finds that luxury does indeed lead to a better life, leading to Gabriel losing his wings.

The trailer shows the now-mortal Gabriel dancing up a storm at a party, as at least one woman takes an interest in him.

Good Fortune is Ansari’s directorial debut for Lionsgate Movies. He’s joined by Keke Palmer and Sherry Cola for the film, which opens in theaters on October 17th.
