A24’s upcoming feature could be called Doomscrolling: the Movie.

Though sparse details are available for Eddington, a new film from Midsommar and Hereditary writer/director Ari Aster, the trailer shows Joaquin Phoenix’s character in bed, scrolling through social media during what might once been called the country’s darkest days: in the initial lock-down stage of the Covid-19 pandemic and at the start of the Black Lives Matter protests against police brutally murdering Black Americans.

The teaser shows clips of stars Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone, Austin Butler and Phoenix either ranting about conspiracies or calmly explaining something to camera.

The official, and very brief, description of the film reads, “In May of 2020, a standoff between a small-town sheriff (Phoenix) and mayor (Pascal) sparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor in Eddington, New Mexico.”

Though it looks and sounds awfully grim, Aster describes the storyline as a “Western-noir dark ensemble comedy.”

Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, Clifton Collins Jr., William Belleau, Cameron Mann, Matt Gomez Hidaka, and Amélie Hoeferle also star in Eddington, which is Aster’s fourth feature film and his second collaboration with Phoenix, who also appeared in 2023’s Beau is Afraid. A24 has released all four of his films.

Eddington will premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival in May. The movie is then opens in theaters on July 18th.
