One look at the gauzy poster art for M. Night Shyamalan’s new movie Remain might just give away the twist ending (assuming there is one.)

And a careful watching of the trailer will probably tell you everything you need to know about the relationship between sweet, young Wren (Phoebe Dynevor) and not-so-young Tate (Jake Gyllenhaal), two attractive people with an affinity for playing board games together.

And if you read the book the movie is based on, written by Nicholas Sparks (of all people) and published last October, well, you surely know how it all goes down, although Shyamalan has said the movie doesn’t exactly follow the book’s plot.

Thus, if you want to be totally unspoiled about the plot, stay away from the book, and maybe all media surrounding the movie, before you sit down in the theater to enjoy it. We here at Pop Culture Junkie think we’ve figured that twist out, and will seal our theory in an envelope ahead of the movie’s February 2027 premiere.

Shyamalan directed and wrote the screenplay for Remain, based on the Sparks book. The film’s tagline reads “When reclusive architect Tate Gordon moves to small coastal town to complete his latest project, he encounters an alluring young woman who pulls him out of his shell, and into the center of a deadly mystery that hangs over the town.”

In addition to playing board games, we see Wren and Tate standing on either side of a curtain, then moving it aside so Wren movie close to Tate, breathlessly asking why they can’t truly be together.

“You know why,” says Gyllenhaal as Tate, which doesn’t give too much away if you aren’t watching what’s happening.

Later in the trailer, we hear the creaking of a door, and watch Wren drift down the barely-lit hallway. Tate follows her into the gloom of the bathroom, but when he turns on the light…

We’ve already said too much. But it’s no spoiler to mention that Ashley Walters, Julie Hagerty, Jay O. Sanders, Tracy Ifeachor, Hannah James, Caleb Ruminer, Kieran Mulcare and Maria Dizzia also star, and that Warner Bros. will release Remain in theaters on February 5th, 2027.
