Widows and widowers who remarry often have to decide which of their spouses they’ll share a cemetery plot with – but what if you had to pick just one as your companion in the afterlife?

That’s the premise of A24’s Eternity, which dropped a new trailer Wednesday. Elizabeth Olsen stars as Joan, who dies and finds herself having to make a choice of how to spend her afterlife – and with whom. One the one hand, there’s Larry (Miles Teller) her husband of 65 years, who like Joan now appears as a much-younger version of himself.

But Joan was married before, to Luke (Callum Turner) who left her a young widow when he was killed in action during the Korean War. Both husbands make a case for Joan’s eternal company, and she has a week to pick one of them, leaving the other one alone forever.

“It kills me that I didn’t get to have a life with you,” Luke tells a swooning Joan, “but I thought of you every day.”

Joan and Larry have “afterlife coordinators” played by John Early and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (respectively) who guide them through their decision – but who may not be as helpful as they should be.

“I was married to her for 65 years, and I gave her children!” Larry tells Anna, his advocate. “There’s nothing more powerful than emotional blackmail,” counsels Anna. “Good on ya!”

Pat Cunnane’s script for Eternity was voted onto The Black List, a ranking of the most-liked unproduced screenplays, back in 2022. Larry Freyne directs and Olga Merediz also stars. The film premiered in September at the Toronto International Film Festival to rave reviews.

Eternity opens in theaters in select cities on November 14th before going nationwide on November 28th.
