You Are Not Supposed to Be Here: We’re Headed Far Underground for A24’s Eerie ‘Backrooms’ Trailer
“I found something.”
In the minimalist teaser trailer for A24’s upcoming horror Backrooms, Chiwetel Ejiofor describes the mysterious space he uncovered underneath a furniture showroom, as the camera slowly descends through cross-sections of eerie rooms.
Ejiofor goes on, saying, “It’s massive in there and just goes on and on and on. All these rooms — this place builds them. Actually, more like it remembers them, and the more times it remembers something, the less it does.”
The teaser doesn’t say or show much of anything but manages to be very unsettling despite that, with each room looking different but confining and claustrophobia-inducing. The only other information on the plot is a line from the film’s Wikipedia entry, which says, “After a therapist’s patient goes missing into a dimension beyond reality, she has to enter the unknown to save him.”
Director Kane Parsons, a visual effects designer, created the world of The Backrooms first as a short film, then as a YouTube webseries. To Parsons, backrooms are hypothetical liminal spaces made up of an unending maze of rooms and hallways. In the first video from the series, an indie movie director is transported from a movie shoot outside to a yellow-tinged underground space with corridors and wide open spaces, but no ingress or egress. And [mild spoiler] he’s not alone there.
Parsons published the Backrooms saga on his Kane Pixels YouTube site, where it has garnered more than 190 million views. Parsons is now the youngest director in A24 history.
In addition to Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value), Mark Duplass (Safety Not Guaranteed), Finn Bennett (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms) and Lukita Maxwell (Shrinking) also star. Roberto Patino and Will Soodik wrote the screenplay and Shawn Levy and Dan Levine are producing.
A24 give theater audiences a tour of Backrooms beginning on May 29th of this year.
