McScreamy: Patrick Dempsey In Talks For Starring Role In Eli Roth Slasher ‘Thanksgiving’
Eli Roth is Enchanted with Patrick Dempsey, if you’ll forgive the pun.
According to Deadline, Roth is in talks with the star of Gray’s Anatomy and Disenchanted to headline his upcoming feature Thanksgiving, which is based on the infamous fake trailer from Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse, released back in 2007.
Spyglass Media, who is producing the pic, has yet to comment. Roth is directing a script written by Jeff Rendel, and shooting is scheduled to start in March. Roger Birnbaum and Roth are producing.
The trailer, featured in the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez thriller Grindhouse, was a gruesome coming attraction for a nonexistent movie in which a slasher carves up the inhabitants of a Massachusetts town in the middle of their annual turkey day celebrations. One scene showed Roth himself being beheaded while in the throes of passion with a date in a convertible.
The fake trailer sparked enough excitement that there were talks of making it a feature-length slasher, with Roth at the helm. Of course, that was nearly 18 years ago, so the project did appear to be dead as a dodo for quite some time.
Four or five fake trailers were produced for Grindhouse, but so far, only one has been turned into a full-length film: Machete, starring Danny Trejo. That film came out in 2010, and was followed by a sequel called Machete Kills in 2013.
While the rest of the ensemble is expected to be a bunch of rising stars, Roth reportedly wanted a big name and thought Dempsey would be perfect for a role that’s the antithesis of his usual romantic leading man roles.
Dempsey can be seen next in Michael Mann’s Ferrari starring Adam Driver.
