Flame, But No Ash: ‘Evil Dead Burn’ Trailer Shows That Family Reunions Truly are Hell on Earth

And you thought your family was from Hell.
Well, maybe you didn’t, but as we see in the trailer that dropped Tuesday, the expression definitely applies to the family from Evil Dead Burn, Sam Raimi’s next film in his enduring Evil Dead franchise.
In the gruesome red-band trailer, we see a woman loading the dishwasher, then stopping as two family members enter the house, eyes wide and mouths agape. As she begs them to tell her what’s wrong, there’s a knock at the door.
Against the better judgment of everyone watching, Alice, the younger woman (Souhelia Yacoub) answers it, revealing an undead woman, missing some fingers and with a car seat headrest lodged in her neck. We later get a glimpse of how she came to be in that condition. The scenes only get more grisly from there, culminating in a character guzzling the melted wax out of a lit candle.

We also see someone unwisely quoting from the Necronomicon – the book of the dead.
The official logline for Evil Dead Burn reads, “after the loss of her husband, a woman seeks solace with her in-laws in their secluded family home. As one by one they are transformed into Deadites—turning the gathering into a family reunion from hell—she comes to discover that the vows she took in life live on… even in death.”
In addition to Yacoub, Evil Dead Burn also stars Tandi Wright, Hunter Doohan, Luciane Buchanan, Errol Shand, Maude Davey, George Pullar, and Greta Van Den Brink. It’s directed by Sébastien Vaniček from a script he wrote with Florent Bernard. Sam Raimi produces along with Bruce Campbell. Campbell played Ash in the original series, starting with the first one (Evil Dead) in 1981. That was followed by Evil Dead II (1987), and Army of Darkness (1992), and a series, Ash vs Evil Dead, which aired on Starz from 2015-18.
There is also a live musical based on the first three movies, performed in various cities with some seats cordoned off for those who wish to sit in the splash zone and be covered in fake gore.
Campbell does not appear in Evil Dead Burn (as far as we know), a standalone film set in the same universe but perhaps lacking the dark humor of the original movie. The movie franchise got a soft reboot in 2013 with Evil Dead, followed by Evil Dead Rise, the fifth installment in the series. Another film in the series, Evil Dead Wrath, is slated for an April, 2028 release.
Evil Dead Burn will flare up in theaters on July 10th of this year.
