The night’s first winner (Daniel Kaluuya) was on mute during his acceptance speech, and Catherine O’Hara had distracting background noise during hers. No, this isn’t your weekly staff meeting, this is the 78th Golden Globes Awards ceremony, live on NBC.

Fortunately, things began to settle down, and hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were able to master the ceremony; Mark Ruffalo and John Boyega’s audio worked perfectly when they accepted their acting awards for TV performances.

Kaluuya won an award for his performance in a supporting role in Judas and the Black Messiah. Catherine O’Hara took home a Globe for best actress in a television series (Schitt’s Creek). John Boyega was awarded for best actor in a supporting role in Small Axe. Mark Ruffalo won as best actor in a limited series in I Know This Much is True.

Some of other the early winners included Soul for best original score and as the best animated feature, Jason Sudeikis as best actor for his role in Ted Lasso, and Aaron Sorkin for best screenplay for Trial of the Chicago Seven. Minari was honored as best foreign language film.

Nomadland was honored as the best motion picture, drama category.

Chadwick Boseman won a posthumous award as best actor in a motion picture, for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. The ceremony does not do an In Memoriam segment, but remembers those lost this past year on its website.

Fey and Poehler used their monologue to call out the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for their lack of diversity; the organization has no Black members.

Norman Lear won the Carol Burnett Award, presented annually to an honoree who has made outstanding contributions to the television medium on or off the screen.

He accepted virtually, saying, “at close to 99, I can tell you that I’ve never lived alone, I’ve never laughed alone and that has as much to do with my being here today as anything else I know,” Lear said. 

“And once more, thank you and bless you Carol Burnett for everything you have meant to me by way of joy, surprise, delight and laughter,” he added. “So glad we had this time together.”

Jane Fonda was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille award, given to a “a talented individual who has made a lasting impact on the film industry.” The 83-year-old actress was honored for a “breadth of work (that) has been anchored in her unrelenting activism, using her platform to address some of the most important social issues of our time.”

“We are a community of storytellers and in turbulent, crisis-torn times, storytelling has always been essential,” Fonda said on stage.
