Before you say no to yet another reboot of Superman from Warner Bros, listen to the details.

Written by acclaimed author Ta-Nehisi Coates and produced by J.J. Abrams under his Bad Robot banner, this Man of Steel would reportedly be Calvin Ellis, a Black man, and the story would be set in one of the iterations of Earth within the multiverse.

In the story created by Grant Morrison and Doug Mahnke, Calvin Ellis is President (and Superman) of Earth-23. The character debuted in 2009’s Final Crisis.

There are reports that Warner Bros has been mulling a new take on Superman since 2018, and Black Panther and Creed star Michael B. Jordan was in consideration for the role. Jordan himself advanced the rumors during an interview with Oprah Winfrey, where he mentioned the other version of Superman.

“It’s tough. I hate being a businessman and understanding both sides of the situation,” Jordan said on the show. “There is a huge upside to it, but being under that microscope, being picked apart and compared to so many different versions of Superman… I would rather do something original. I’ll be Calvin Ellis.”

Jordan never continued on with the project, and he was subsequently cast as in Black Panther. Though Jordan’s name is back in the rumor mill as a potential star, so is the name of John Boyega, who worked with Abrams on his Star Wars films.

The film is very early into the development process with no start or release date targeted. J.J. Abrams will produce the feature under his Bad Robot shingle and Hannah Minghella will serve as producer.

No director is attached as of yet and plot details remain under wraps. And speculation aside, the search for an actor to play Superman hasn’t begun in earnest yet. Only Coates and Abrams’ participation is sure at this point.

“To be invited into the DC Extended Universe by Warner Bros., DC Films and Bad Robot is an honor,” Coates said in a statement. “I look forward to meaningfully adding to the legacy of America’s most iconic mythic hero.”

Abrams added in a separate statement, “There is a new, powerful and moving Superman story yet to be told. We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with the brilliant Mr. Coates to help bring that story to the big screen, and we’re beyond thankful to the team at Warner Bros. for the opportunity.”

Coates is a National Book Award winner for Between the World and Me, and he penned a highly-regarded Black Panther series that began in 2016, as well as a 25-issue storyline for Captain America in 2018.
