A24 Delivers 2X the Horror with Atmospheric ‘Mother Mary’ and ‘Backrooms’ Trailer Drops
A24 doubled up on terror on April Fool’s Day.
Anne Hathaway is a pop star (with a new single out in real life Wednesday) in Mother Mary, coming later this month from A24. Hathaway plays the title character, a Lady Gaga-like performer who performs the single “My Mouth is Lonely For You,” written and produced by FKA Twigs, which dropped the same day as the trailer. See below.
The movie trailer is mostly performance video, but we do see a little bit of what the film is about. According to A24, Hathaway stars as the titular Mother Mary…an iconic pop star living in the violent glare of the flashbulbs. On the verge of a comeback, she reunites with Sam Anselm, (played by Michaela Coel), Mother Mary’s estranged best friend and former costume designer. Long-buried wounds rise to the surface, and apparently, it gets messy.
The trailer allows us to see Sam and Mary interacting in a conversation fraught with the ghosts of things unsaid. We see a trail of blood, a hand piercing a wound, Sam and Mary kissing, and Mary running away from something, terrified.
“Mother Mary, we’re reinventing you,” says Sam, as everything goes red.

David Lowery directs from a script he wrote. Hunter Schafer, Atheena Frizzell, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Alba Baptista, Isaura Barbé-Brown, Sian Clifford, and FKA Twigs also star.
Mother Mary gets a limited release on April 17th before opening nationwide on April 24th. The movie’s sort-of soundtrack album titled Mother Mary: Greatest Hits, which features additional songs that Hathaway wrote with artists Charli xcx and Jack Antonoff, will also be released April 17th. Another single, “Burial” was released last month.
A24 also released a trailer for Backrooms, which we wrote about in February when the studio issued a short teaser.
In the full trailer, we see Clark (Chiwetel Ejiofor) as he discovers a secret passage through the back wall of a furniture store call Cap’n Clark’s Ottoman Empire. Once he’s through the wall, he discovers a massive office space, with yellow walls and harsh overhead lighting, and a huge pile of furniture in the center of the main room.
From there, Clark goes exploring through the seemingly endless labyrinth of rooms, seeing a strange figure in the distance. Then we see Clark at an appointment with his therapist (Renate Reinsve), who believes that Clark believes he walked through a wall into a strange office dimension.
Wanting to convince her, Clark hires a camera crew to document what’s behind the wall, and that’s when everything goes pear-shaped. We see the therapist entering the weird backroom, and then running for her life down a narrow corridor.
“All these rooms … this place builds them. It’s like a maze…it just goes on and on. Sometimes I’m scared I’ll get lost,” Clark says in the trailer.
Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell also star in Backrooms, which was written by Will Soodik and directed by Kane Parsons, who is adapting his YouTube short series The Backrooms, which he published under the name Kane Pixels.

Backrooms opens to the general public on May 29th, only in theaters.
