The new trailer for DC’s Supergirl, due out this summer, raises the stakes on the title heroine’s mission…she’s not just saving the world, she’s saving her dog.

The trailer starts off with Kara Zor-El’s cousin Clark (David Corenswet) video-calling her to encourage her to stay on Earth for a spell, to “find her people.”

Kara quips, “Yeah, well, that’s the thing, Clark. I have no people.”

But what Kara does have is her dog, Krypto, who figured prominently in her cousin Clark’s feature film Superman last summer. As far as Kara’s concerned, wherever Krypto is, that’s her home. In the trailer, Kara flashes back to when Krypto was a mere pup, although an extremely high-spirited one.

So that’s why Kara/Supergirl turns into the Kryptonian version of John Wick when a bedazzled villain called Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts) shoots a poisoned arrow into her pooch. Kara finds another one of his victims, Ruthye Marye Knoll (Eve Ridley), a young woman whose father was killed by Krem and his people.

Kara swears to protect her as the two go against Krem for 1) the antidote to the poison that will soon kill Krypto, and 2) revenge for Ruthye’s fallen father. The two are joined by Jason Momoa not as Aquaman, which he played in the DCEU iteration of the Superman films, but as Lobo, another DC comics character. Kara meets Lobo during a bar brawl, giving her a good preview of his temperament.
