Sam Wilson has been thought of as Captain America for a while but it only became official Wednesday.

Anthony Mackie signed a deal to take up Cap’s shield in the fourth Captain America movie from Marvel Studios. Deadline reported that the upcoming film will be written by The Falcon and the Winter Soldier head writer and creator Malcolm Spellman and series staff writer Dalan Musson. There is no director announced for the film as of yet.

Marvel Studios doesn’t give much away about its movies, especially this early in the game, so it’s not known whether the movie will involve Bucky Barnes, aka Sebastian Stan, who starred with Mackie in Falcon.

Mackie played Falcon in six Marvel films beginning with Captain America: The Winter Soldier before his turn in the show about what happened in the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame when after Steve Rogers left his shield to Sam and prompted him to take up the mantle.

The post-credit scene in Falcon‘s finale also set up a potential villain; Emily VanCamp’s turncoat agent Sharon Carter was revealed to be the Power Broker, the one pulling the strings for Karli Morgenthau’s super-serum operation. Sam, unaware of Carter’s double-identity, makes good on his promise of awarding her with a full pardon.

There will probably be a long wait for Captain America 4 to hit the theaters. There are a number of movies with release dates on Marvel’s slate, the last being Guardians of the Galaxy 3, which is scheduled to premiere in May of 2023. Other projects are in the works too, including Moon Knight, Blade, and the second season of Loki, none of which have release dates.
