Lights Out 2 is back on.

After nearly a decade in and out of development, New Line has officially greenlit (again) the sequel to their 2016 horror hit Lights Out. Connor Osborne McIntyre (the upcoming Animals) will script the follow-up, which will be produced by the original film’s writer, Eric Heisserer, and director, David F. Sandberg, in conjunction with James Wan’s Atomic Monster company.

Lights Out focused on a young woman (Teresa Palmer) who tries to protect her young half-brother against an evil spirit that kills its victims in the dark. Maria Bello, Gabriel Bateman, Billy Burke, and Alexander DiPersia also starred. The film was based on Sandberg’s short film of the same name, released in 2013.

Lights Out grossed $149 million worldwide on a production budget of less than $5 million, and its success had New Line greenlighting a sequel almost immediately. But attempts to develop a sequel never amounted to anything; both Heisserer and Chris Borrelli penned scripts over the years but none of them amounted to a movie.

Last fall, Sandberg told attendees of Boston’s Midnight Fest that a sequel could happen, but not with the script he wrote.

“We did have a version of a sequel which it wouldn’t be if we do it now. Well, some of it might be. But that one took place shortly after [the original], but now Martin’s not a kid anymore, so it would have to take place, like, 10 years later.”

Casting and plot details are still in the dark, and a production and release timeline have yet to be disclosed.
