Some trailers give the whole movie away. That’s not the case for any of the teasers released thus far for Longlegs.

Instead, the numerous, disconnected, and arcane teasers released to date for Longlegs, which will star Nicolas Cage as a serial killer, only offer glimpses into what transpires in the movie. The teasers also feature the film’s eerie soundscape: heavy breathing, sobbing, screams, the hissing of a snake, and someone (presumably Cage) saying “there she is” is a disturbing falsetto.

Cage barely appears in the teasers; we see his badly-coiffed head but never his face.

Add to that the utter lack of explanation of…anything from Neon, the production company distributing the movie, in the notes under the teaser, and unhelpful clip titles like “We’ve been waiting for her” and “You’ve got the teeth of the hydra upon you,” and it seems Neon has put together a marketing campaign designed to make you do anything to find out more.

(That’s not even mentioning the scrawled rune-like language appearing in red in conjunction with the film’s title, or the unnerving ‘poetry’ that appears over the face of Maika Monroe (It Follows) who plays the Clarice Starling to Cage’s Hannibal Lecter.)

So close the Crimson and Clover,
All gone now to the edge
Where the black begins,
The long forked tongue hisses.

The most recent teasers, titled “Dirty: Part Two” and “Sweet: Part Two” (and don’t bother searching for part one of either – apparently that is what the posters are called) don’t stray from Neon’s ‘the less you know the better’ philosophy. Fortunately, the internet is here to help with this plot summary:

“FBI Agent Lee Harker (Monroe) is a gifted new recruit assigned to the unsolved case of an elusive serial killer (Cage), known only as ‘The Man Downstairs’. As the case takes complex turns, unearthing evidence of the occult, Harker discovers a personal connection to the merciless killer and must race against time to stop him before he claims the lives of another innocent family.”

In addition to Cage as the killer and Monroe, who plays Harker, Longlegs also stars Alicia Witt and Blair Underwood as unnamed characters.

The film was written and directed by Osgood Perkins (Gretel & Hansel) and is produced by Cage under his Saturn Films banner with Dan Kagan (Significant Other), Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (Insidious), Dave Caplan (The End We Start From) and Chris Ferguson (Child’s Play).

Neon does want you to know that Longlegs appears in theaters beginning July 12th, and it’s certainly possible that future teasers will give interested viewers more of an idea of what they will get while watching the film. But then again, perhaps they have given you all the creepy clues you need; or at least all you are going to get.

Good luck solving the puzzle!
