Regé-Jean Page to Star as ‘The Saint’ – Is This a Stepping Stone to Becoming Bond?
Regé-Jean Page is recreating one of Roger Moore’s iconic roles, but it’s not Bond. Not yet.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed Tuesday that Page (Bridgerton) will lead in and executive produce Paramount’s reboot of The Saint in a new feature film reboot of the adventure thriller. Actor and playwright Kwame Kwei-Armah (892) will write the script and Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Brad Krevoy are producing. Robert Evans, who died in 2019 and will receive a posthumous producer credit.
There have been several attempts to reboot this property; as late as last year a project in the works had Chris Pine attached and Dexter Fletcher directing. While that’s not happening, Fletcher may still be involved. The filmmaker is popular with the studio, where he is currently directing The Offer, a limited series for Paramount Plus detailing the making of The Godfather.
The Saint is based on the early 20th century adventure novels by Leslie Charteris that featured a mysterious man named Simon Templar who was a hybrid of a spy and a Robin Hood-type character. He appeared not just in novels, but in comics, serials, movies and a television series. Before he was Bond, Roger Moore starred in the 1960s British TV series, and Val Kilmer starred in Paramount’s 1997 version of The Saint as a master of disguise. An attempted reboot of the series in 2017 starred Adam Rayner and brought Moore back in another role in his last television movie appearance.
The logline for the new version is unknown, and there is no projected release date yet.
While this movie may put Page out of the running to play Bond in the next film in the series, in the long term it may help. Page’s resume as a action hero and leading man gets a little longer, and gives him a better chance for future Bond consideration. Page is 31 so it’s not a big deal if he has to wait a little longer before becoming James Bond – Daniel Craig was 40 when he assumed the role. And if Roger Moore can move from The Saint to Bond, so can Page.
Page is so hot now because his popularity in Bridgerton as regal heartthrob Simon Basset launched him into the stratosphere, making him one of Hollywood’s most sought-after actors. Legions of fans were vocally disappointed when he announced that he would not be returning for the Netflix period drama’s second season.
After Bridgerton wrapped, he lined up roles in the Russo brothers’ The Gray Man with Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling, as well as Paramount’s Dungeons & Dragons movie. The Saint will be his first time headlining a studio feature.
