The Fright Stuff: Sam Raimi’s New Project is Finding the Next Great Horror Director…Could it Be You?
Filmmakers: if your work is good enough to scare Sam Raimi and his friends, you could win his help to produce your horror short – help that includes a check for $25,000.
Raimi, who has written, directed, and/or produced films and franchises like the Evil Dead series, the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy, Coen Brothers films, Darkman, Drag Me to Hell, Send Help and so many more movies, announced on Thursday that he is teaming up with the non-profit Decentralized Pictures to find the next great horror auteur.
“We’re looking for the next great horror storyteller,” Raimi says in the video posted above. The submission site gives more details, saying the contest is “looking for filmmakers who bring a fresh perspective to horror, to find the next Sam Raimi—creators with a strong command of atmosphere, tension, character development, visual storytelling, and originality. Whether psychological, supernatural, visceral, comedic, or somewhere entirely unexpected, we want to discover the next great horror creator.”
Raimi won’t be the only one judging the submissions. Roman Coppola, Jed Shepherd, Eduardo Sanchez, Leo Matchett and Emma Raimi will assist him in selecting the final recipient.

In the video, Raimi explains, “once we have viewed all your submissions, we will select one film for the award. To that filmmaker, we will provide $25,000 to be used in the creation of their next film.” Raimi also pledges mentoring support, while he playfully pretends to put his eyes out with his glasses.
Go to the Decentralized Pictures website for more details and to submit your work. The requirements are listed below.
- Submission Fee: $25 (Fee is for community review compensation)
- Short Video: A compelling short video sample demonstrating the filmmaker’s creative perspective, storytelling ability, and production capabilities. This may be a previously produced scene, short film excerpt, visual sample, teaser, or proof of concept.
- Project Description: One-page document or lookbook describing the film the applicant wishes to produce (synopsis, visual references, etc.)
- Optional – Applicants are encouraged to submit a short pitch video in voiceover or selfie-style format addressing topics such as:
- Who are you as a filmmaker?
- Why do you want to tell this particular horror story?
- Who or what influences your filmmaking?
- Projects do not need to be traditional horror. We encourage filmmakers to explore the genre and its subgenres in original and unexpected ways.
- Selection Process – The DCP community will shortlist finalists through DCP’s transparent community review platform, evaluating submissions based on:
- Distinctive creative voice
- Atmosphere and command of horror genre
- Overall filmmaking potential
Decentralized Pictures points out on the page that all proposed films must reasonably be capable of production within the allocated $25,000 production budget. Recipient will enter into a financing agreement with Decentralized Pictures to produce the short film.
Submissions are open now through Dec. 31, with the community review period ending 14 days after submissions close. The finalists will be announced shortly after the review period ends. As of this writing there are 43 submissions posted on the page, so even if you aren’t entering the contest, you can go to the site and view the films that are in the running for the top prize.
