All Rise: HBO Max Calls Court to Order for ‘The People v. Gorilla Grodd’ True Crime Mockumentary Series

You can call HBO Max’s new series Law & Order: Metropolis. But funny.
The mockumentary series is actually called The People v. Gorilla Grodd, but you get the drift. The streamer has ordered the series headlined by Skyler Gisondo (Superman‘s Jimmy Olsen) reprising his character for the eight-episode show. The show’s official description has the Daily Planet photog directing and starring in a true-crime show that delves into the mystery of “whether Gorilla Grodd was wrongly convicted in one of Metropolis’ most famous murder trials,” in which he was convicted of killing his father, the King of Gorilla City.
Gorilla Grodd, the super-intelligent ape who occasionally bedevils Superman in print and on screen, will be played by Jimmy Tatro. The character of Gorilla Grodd, who has psychic powers and other skills after his encounter with an alien spaceship, was created in 1959 by John Broome and Carmine Infantino, and was most recently featured as part of the CW’s Arrowverse shows. He has appeared as the villain in numerous comics, typically against The Flash.
Other Daily Planet staffers making the move to the small screen include Beck Bennett (Steve Lombard), Mikaela Hoover (Cat Grant) and Wendell Pierce (Perry White).

Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda will serve as showrunners in addition to their writing and executive producing duties. The two created the Netflix series American Vandal, a true crime spoof, which starred Tatro.
Yacenda will direct all eight episodes, and Perrault plays a part in the series. He’ll be joined by Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, Arian Moayed, Andrew Leeds, and Tim Baltz.
DC Studios is behind the series, of course, with James Gunn and Peter Safran also executive producing.
In a tongue-in-cheek statement, Perrault and Yacenda said, “We’re excited by the challenge of creating a series that feels less like an entry into the DCU and more like an artifact from it. A Daily Planet original documentary made for the people of Metropolis. We hope it’ll appeal to fans of the comics, comedy and true crime. And while we can’t speak for audiences here yet, we already know it’s a huge hit in Metropolis. They love this series.”
No premiere date for The People v. Gorilla Grodd has been set as of yet. The next Superman film, Man of Tomorrow, flies into theaters on July 9th, 2027.
