‘Frankenshteyn’ Mix: Hulu Releasing Director’s Cut of ‘X-Files: I Want to Believe’ with More Gore than Before
Say hello to Vrach Frankenshteyn in the new trailer for The X-Files: I Want to Believe.
A recut (read: gorier) version of Chris Carter’s 2008 movie based on the long-running Fox television series is coming to Hulu this month. I Want to Believe hit theaters six years after Fox cancelled The X Files, but Carter’s vision for the film was dampened when 20th Century Fox execs made him tone down the film from a PG-13 version from an R-rated one.
Carter got another chance to make the movie he wanted though, and The X-Files: I Want to Believe Vrach Frankenshteyn will debut on Hulu, the streaming home of the X-Files, on August 14th. The addendum to the title, Vrach Frankenshteyn, is Russian for “Doctor Frankenstein,” and gives a hint as to the horrific nature of the film.
In a discussion with David Duchovny on his Fail Better podcast, Carter said “Now I have a chance to go back and make the scary movie that I always intended. It’s not just doing a director’s cut to do a director’s cut. It’s really kind of bringing to life something that for me was on the page and never got to the screen.”
The movie’s official logline reads, “When a group of women is mysteriously abducted, it becomes a case right out of the X-Files,” reads the official synopsis. “Years after walking away from the FBI, Fox Mulder and Dr. Dana Scully are pulled back from the shadows when a federal agent vanishes without a trace. In a case you’d never see on TV, their only lead is a disgraced, defrocked priest claiming to have horrific psychic visions of the crime. Forced to confront the ghosts of their past, the partners must navigate a chilling winter landscape and an even darker human monstrosity. The truth of these crimes is out there somewhere … and it will take Mulder and Scully to find it.”

Chris Carter wrote the script for his theatrical film directorial debut with Frank Spotnitz. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson returned as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully for I Want to Believe, as did Mitch Pileggi as Walter Skinner. The film also stars Billy Connelly as a defrocked priest trying to make amends for sexual assault crimes, and Amanda Peet and Alvin “Xzibit” Joiner as FBI agents who work with Mulder and Scully. Callum Keith Rennie, Adam Godley, Fagin Woodcock, and Nikki Aycox also star.
Hulu will also be the home of director Ryan Coogler’s X-Files reboot with Himesh Patel and Danielle Deadwyler, though no date has been set for the premiere.
